A shot of truth about the flu shot

By Dr.Poonam Balaji                Vaccines are perhaps one of the greatest known inventions of science. We realize the significance of vaccination now more than ever as we desperately seek for a vaccination for the corona virus to stop the global pandemic.   Vaccines                The first vaccine was discovered by Edward Jenner in 1798, against small pox. …

COVID-19 research update

An update on COVID-19 research                 Several publications over the past week have started to focus on the differences observed in COVID-19 patients. While it is widely reported that COVID-19 has “specific” populations that it affects more severely than others (men, elderly, those with other health morbidities) it isn’t exactly known why these differences exist. …

Biology. Understanding. Empowerment.

Biology is central to our understanding of our world and how we navigate it. While advances in biological sciences are constant and extensive, we may not have time to absorb all of these changes at pace. We aim to make content that stimulates the mind, to build a community of engaged participants and make general biological principles accessible to a wide audience.

  • Provide a space for curious individuals to explore biological mechanisms.
  • Understand how biological mechanisms underlie technological advances.
  • Explore the implications of technology on life and living.

Steven E. Justiniano, Ph.D.

I love living things and how they relate to each other. Exploring the communication and the organization among the cells that we are composed of has been a life-long passion of mine. Studying developmental genetics has given me a more profound understanding of this organization and the complexity of organisms. I learned about the wonderful mechanisms cells use to navigate their complex and ever-changing environment.

I also explored the mechanisms that living things use to prevent and repair damage. Exploring the effect of inflammation and small molecular changes on normal and disease states, I learned that actions are equally as important as context. Actions that may be beneficial to the organism in some contexts can prevent healing and accelerate damage under other circumstances.

What emerged from my explorations was a complex, dynamic understanding of the living world. From the cellular to the whole organism, we seek to organize, explore and learn. Understanding when and how to use this information is crucial to the success of life.

I have created a space to explore basic biological mechanisms, how conclusions are arrived at and how those conclusions drive technological innovation and a desire to better navigate our world successfully. Here we seek to explore the living world, enjoy its wonderful diversity and use our shared understanding to enhance our lives.
